The holiday season is upon us. The purchase and sale has been signed, you attended the closing, you’re cleared to be in your new digs by Christmas. While you’ll do anything you can to be moved into your new home for the holidays, you don’t want to deal with the stress of it all — coupled with the stress of holiday shopping and parties. Here’s how to get it all done stress free:
Make Changes in Advance
If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to prepare for billing and utility changes before you move out of your old place. This will prevent delays of service that could really pose a challenge for you later on. Be sure to:
- File for change of address with the post office. This way, you won’t experience a gap in service and can ensure all your bills, junk mail and holiday cards will follow you to your new house!
- File for an address change at the DMV. Your license will need to reflect your address change as well.
- Cancel gym and magazine subscriptions. You may not even use these things anymore, and they’re draining your wallet. Get rid of them now, and if you still feel you want to re-up when you’re settled in, by all means go ahead.
- Set up automatic payments with your utility company, cable company, credit cards, bank and mortgage provider. Most providers allow you to make all those changes right on their website for a seamless transition.
Schedule Your Mover
The holidays are a busy time for everyone, movers especially. Since everyone wants to be in their new home for the holidays, residential movers are at a premium. You should already have scheduled your movers, but better late than never. Any reputable mover will try their best to accommodate you on nights, weekends, whatever works. Just be prepared to possibly pay more for last-minute moves or for premium time slots.
Prepare for Parties
You have something special to celebrate this year — your new home. So it’s inevitable you will want to couple your holiday party with a housewarming. The major fixes can come later after the new year, but for now, focus on the cosmetic repairs that will make your home attractive to guests.
- Hire a cleaning service to go through the whole house top to bottom.
- Paint the walls and ceilings. Nothing says makeover like a fresh coat of paint!
- Install new switch plates.
- Change out the drapes and curtains.
- Change the locks on all exterior doors.
- Polish the hardwood floors.
- Patch up any holes, cracks or dents in the walls.
- Decorate inside and out with tasteful yet festive touches. Don’t go crazy — a few twinkling lights, some garland and a wreath will set the tone just fine.
Prep for the Big Day
Work with your mover on how you will want things arranged. Mark boxes clearly with the name of the room in which you want it to go in. Have a clear plan of attack so that everything moves smoothly on the day of. Take measurements, account for tight fits, and stay in communication with your moving company.
