How to Handle a Move When Getting a Divorce

Trying to figure out your move when getting a divorce? Olde World Movers can help.

If you are facing a divorce situation and need to relocate to another city or state fairly quickly, you need a plan in place. Part of that plan is to hire residential movers who can get you moved quickly, efficiently, and affordably. First, it’s important to come up with a plan, and that involves creating a divorce moving-out checklist.

Include the following documents in your divorce checklist:

  • Income Tax Returns
  • Financial Records
  • Wills
  • Employment Records
  • Pension Plan Information
  • Investment Account Statements
  • Social Security Statements
  • Debt Records

Here are some tips to ensure your divorce relocation goes smoothly:

Start the Process Early

It’s best to give yourself at least eight weeks to handle the preparation for your move. Sometimes, this much time isn’t possible, but try to give yourself as much time as you can. This will keep your stress level down while helping you plan for the smoothest move possible.

Follow this two-month moving calendar so you can stay organized and clear-headed as you move toward the next step in your life’s journey.

8 Weeks Out

  • Research movers and start collecting quotes to compare costs.
  • Choose a mover based on your research as well as reviews from others.
  • Make sure the mover has good reviews and a good standing with the BBB.
  • If being relocated for work, ask what your company relocation policy covers and what you are responsible for covering.
  • Inventory and divide up your belongings. You will need to create piles according to what you want to keep, sell, donate or trash. You may also need a pile for belongings that should go into storage.
  • Measure all rooms in the new home, include layouts of hallways, doors, closets and windows. Measure your furniture and come up with scaled cutouts as part of a room layout. Give copies to the movers and also tape a copy on the door of each room.
