If you live with a constantly messy room, you know how stressful and overwhelming it can be just to walk in there. When messes are so big, sometimes you assume it’s better to ignore it rather than face the problem head on. But we’re here to help you de-clutter everything so you can lower your stress and be proud of that room once again!
Sometimes you don’t have a choice in cleaning a messy room. You may be planning a residential move and need to speed up the process in order to get everything packed for moving day. Here are four tips to moving your cluttered room.
1. Organize Before Packing
Make three piles, then go through everything one by one, placing each item in a“Keep,” “Throw Away” or “Donate” pile. Gently used clothing, toys and furniture can go to local charities, while trash can be reserved for the junk removal company. In terms of clothes, if you haven’t worn a particular item in one year, toss it. Family heirlooms, photo albums and other cherished items you can’t live without can be packed up carefully for the move.
2. Pack an Essentials Bag
This should be packed separately and last. This bag should contain everything you will need on the first night of your arrival at the new digs. The last thing you want to do at the end of a long moving day is go looking for plates to eat takeout pizza on or toilet paper for a bathroom visit. Good items to pack in this bag include:
- Toiletries like contact lens solution, toothpaste and toothbrushes, floss, soap and makeup remover
- Toilet paper and other paper products like napkins and paper plates
- Cleaning products like a mop and sanitizing wipes
- Essential toys and electronics to keep your kids amused
- Cell phone chargers and batteries
- Prescription medication
Keep this bag with you in your car rather than pack it on the moving truck.
3. Label Boxes Clearly
Clear labeling is a must if you want the movers to quickly and efficiently place your boxes in the right rooms upon arrival.Using a thick marker, label all sides and the top of the box with the designated room and location, such as “master bedroom, second door down hall on right,” or “guest bathroom downstairs.”
You can even use different colored markers for each room category. Boys’ bedroom could be blue, office could be red, kitchen could be yellow. If you want to be super organized, write out a list of the contents of each box on a separate piece of paper and tape to the side, suggests the American Moving and Storage Association.
4. Use a Moving App
Download a moving app like Sortly, TaskRabbit, Unpakt, or Wunderlist to help you keep track of all your belongings.Keeping a visual inventory of your stuff, and even creating customized labels for your packing boxes, is possible with the latest in technology. Why not make your life a little easier with apps you can store on your phone and log into when you need them? Beats paper and pencil any day.
